Central Florida Earth Day!

Today a few of us will be at the Central Florida Earth Day festivities downtown in Lake Eola Park. We'll be coordinating and running a bike valet service, so if you decide to ride down to the park you can bring your bike to us, we'll watch it for you and make sure it stays safe as you enjoy the rest of our fellow vendors and friends around the lake. This of course is all for free, but we always accept donations. This event is one of two large events that Veg CF puts on every year. Come on out an check it out on this lovely day.

The event runs from 10 AM - 6 PM, it's free to come, and there are plenty of friendly faces to meet and see. Click the flyer below for more information.

Fair Trade Poker Run!

In conjunction with The Fair Trade Project, a local organization who's simple, but important mission is to support people and fair trade, we at Rusted Chain will be helping out with this event. A few of us will be there with our tools for some pre-race tuneups. Come on out, and support a few great local initiatives to help make a global impact.

Registration is at 3 PM at Austin's Coffee on Fairbanks. The race will begin at 4 PM. It's $5 to register, and there are tons of great prizes to be had. Don't feel intimidated if this is your first race, as this one is not about who is the fastest, but who has the best poker hand. Come enjoy great people, make new friends, ride your bike, and enjoy some good tunes at the after party.

As usual Rusted Chain will also be open tomorrow (Sunday) at the space from 3 PM to 7 PM for those that don't know the space is at the Public Storage on Colonial and Maguire. We provide free access to tools, and knowledge of how to work on your bike. Feel free to stop by.

See you soon!

Sunday 01/17/10 Recap

Steve, Elise and Myself volunteered on this past sunday. We had several bmx frames (one of them, presumably indestructable and appropriately monikered the "IRON HORSE"), and a couple road frames donated. Steve trued a couple wheels, I worked on the cannondale (it works, aside from the necessity to tune up the derailleurs a little better, and work out a stiff link). Two people named Alby and Leah stopped by to ask about who we are and what we do, they offered some road bike stuff to donate, so we'll probably be seeing some more of them.

I learned a lot of stuff i sort of took for intuitive until it really came down to dailing; involving cantilever brakes. I've only really ever had to adjust spring tension in brakes a couple random times (mostly with bmx-style u-brakes) and kind of felt like a fish out of water on the c'dale - it wasn't until we consulted the good book (zinn and the art of road bike maintenance) that some light was shed on these quirky stopping devices.

Elise made some really cool labels for the small parts drawers, but we'll need some tape to affix them.

word to your whole family.

Volunteers Needed for VegFest on Saturday, October 24th

Hey everyone,
Saturday is vegfest, a great opportunity to table, talk, pass out lit., and take some donations. We will be setting up the bike corral/valet in full force. We are looking for some volunteers to help ease the strain on everyone. Hopefully we can get a couple people to work a couple hours a piece. Please contact me, or any of the collective members first if you would like to volunteer. My email is AglioFallsDown@aol.com. Or, you can comment on this blog and I'll get a hold of you. Thanks!

Short Update.

Hey everyone,
just a little update here. Audubon went super well on Wednesday. We took donations, gave away cupcakes, fixed bikes and had some awesome conversations. It deffinately felt like the aud. of old, except HOT. Can anyone get involved this Wednesday? It'd be great if someone could make buttons, or food or anything really.

Space will be open on Sunday from 3-7. We decided to consolidate and have our meeting on our open day, to involve the most people. Please come out if you can. Lots to talk about.

Check it!

It's not too late to submit art! We also need to borrow some lights (spot light type) for the show. Please remember to dress up. If you have any questions on what dirty formal is, just imagine if you were at a wedding, and fell down a hill. Or just rip the sleeves off your tux :)
